There are no official figures. Estimates vary but 5 to 10% of those diagnosed with PD are under the age of 50. The condition known as YOPD (Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease) has separate symptoms and rare disease status. Many will live with the condition for decades – suffering because of the condition and through side effects of the treatments currently available.
Causes maybe genetic, environmental, or a mix of factors. Its impact stretches far beyond the individual. There are no official figures, there are no official costs. If we did you may well see its impact on your tax bill. It’s something none of us can afford to ignore, and all of us are at risk of. Heather Kennedy is a young, vibrant writer, dancer and mother with Parkinson’s. How do people see her? Is it changing her as a person? What about the future?

My Parkinson's diagnosis acceptance journey
I have been reflecting on the past few years lately and realized things have changed so much …. six years ago this week (March 2013), I heard four words I was not prepared to hear: “You have Parkinson’s disease”.
To say I handled it well from the beginning would be an overstatement. However, through the help and guidance of many, I eventually fully accepted my diagnosis and have transformed my focus in life.
I couldn’t have imagined sharing this story a few years ago, I was not a person who was so public with my private thoughts. I now believe sharing my journey may, in some way, help someone who is where I was just a few years ago.
Please share with anyone who you believe could benefit from hearing this.

Tim Hague Sr. is a registered nurse by day (pay check) and a professional speaker and writer the rest of the time (passion). He overcame the odds when he went from a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease to — just three years later — becoming the inaugural winner of CTV’s The Amazing Race Canada. He believes that, like many others who suffer with a myriad of other ailments, we can live to our fullest when we choose to persevere.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
